Three seasons – fall, winter, spring -after a wildfire.
Sunday I wandered into one of my all time favorite, soft, sweet and marvelously lush camping spots- Scott’s Flat and Hell Gate Campgrounds, both along the banks of the So. Fork Trinity River.
I knew I wasn’t going to find the familiarity & the beauty I once knew. These two campgrounds were burned over in the August Complex Wildfire of 2020, two weeks after camping here! As I suspected the forest landscape had been massively changed by the fire.

But the river still cascades thru emerald and nourishing. And I little sign. “Keep the River Pretty” (I created and hung to nudge and remind users) survived the fire unscathed! Seeing it took my breathe away, caught me by surprise and woke me up.
I will never have the same relationship with this place as I had before but I can, I will, foster a new one.
(NOTE: This area is technically closed. There are no signs posted on the ground but the USFS websites stipulates it is closed to any and all visitors.)
