
Sitting here at my “desk”, a lovely soft, worn in wooden kitchen table, pouring over photos from summer “fieldwork”, fumbling for words to entice you to follow me into the wilds and then I hear the story of Frederick. Frederick is a field mouse. While his mice friends gather seeds and nuts all summer in anticipation for the winter, Frederick takes on a different task. Several of his mice friends don’t understand why Frederick is not helping, some are even angry. But Frederick knew what he was doing was important and that sometimes it is hard for others to understand this. Then one cold, gray winter day shivering and anxious the mice all gathered their little cold feet. Frederick climbs a big rock above his gathered friends, he asks them to close their eyes and then Frederick begins to describes for them the feel and color of summer – so that they would feel warmer-
…and it works.
May you find nourishment from plants grown in the sun, and pulled from the earth. May the water of your body coalesce with pure water seeped from stone. May you find a moments breathe in air cleansed by trees. May you thank the Earth for all your Blessings.
