She inspired me

In all the woods, all my life, where I have pitched a tent, the others there have all been white too. This lack of color in the campground does not go unnoticed by me. It isn’t about economic status it is about racism. Me, an older white woman, who makes me apprehensive when I’m out camping? – white men. (Some of you may remember my post about what I’ve been asked while out camping solo) The anxiety and fear must be intense for a PoC. I read blogs and follow people on IG from all over the world who camp: Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Spain. This is an American problem! I want this to stop. What can I do? It was a woman (who is a PoC) that inspired me to go out Solo camping. Ya, that’s right.S he is an outspoken advocate for Diversity, Equity & inclusion in the outdoor industry.

She reminded me to:

1. check my biases

2. accept the feeling of discomfort about this topic

3. Initiate and invite

If you have ideas for me I liked to hear them!
