Tent pole repair & tutorial, a gift from Mr. J.
- Find replacement pole. This turned out to be harder than expected, check length & diameter!
- Use needle nose pliers and pull elastic cord out one end of pole chain to reach knot.
- Untie knot but don’t let it slip back in tent poles out of sight.
- Remove damaged pole. In the past I have repaired poles broken along center with a hose clamp (this works surprisingly well). Since this pole was shredded at the tip where it goes into the adjoining pole it had to be removed.
- Replace with new pole. In this case we had to rearrange the poles because the new pole had to be cut to be the same length as the others which meant it no longer had the metal female end. We cut the fiberglass pole with a pipe cutter.
- Re-thread the elastic and re-tie knot. We used a narrow gauge wire to assist with this part.
Ta -Da! Reuse, Repair! The little red Coleman tent I use for camping I purchased at the Friends of the Dunes Gear Sale in the spring of 2019. https://www.friendsofthedunes.org/gearsale It was a real score, brand new and $20 less than store bought. Last September one of the poles was shredded during the high winds that followed the epic thunder and lightning storm I rode out in the Scott Mountains. Some medical tape and I limped it through the final days of the camp season. Repair was necessary for use this season.
