I’ve said it several times and, I truly mean it when I say… “I’m scared of the dark”.My heart races, I get agitated and jumpy, and basically, if when I’m out camping, I just hide in my tent until morning, (still after two full summers of pitching my tent in the wilds!).Paradoxically, it is also exactly what I crave – total darkness. The Klamath Mountains they provide – darkness is easy to find there (I suppose Bigfoot loves this). When I first ventured out Solo, I don’t know why, but I wasn’t expecting so much darkness. Sure, I had a flashlight and a little lantern to help me see at night, but I wasn’t prepared for the absence of ALL light – true darkness. The stars and the moon can provide a surprising amount of illumination when unpolluted by artificial light, but, and this is a big but, it is still dark; and the moon doesn’t always shine, and the stars can be obscured above a forest of trees. In an effort to embrace my fear and to become more acquainted and comfortable with the night I’ve started a “project” I’m calling Beyond the Street Light – An Exercise in Darkness.Share your dark tales and/or join me for a night walk.Stay tuned for my DARK posts and bright thoughts on this subject!
