I’ve come to appreciate camping in the rain as a quintessential coastal camping rite of passage…and I’ve loved every freaking minute of it!!

USAL BEACH~ a PRECIOUS piece of Northcoast Splendor! Six miles north of Hwy. 1 at the southern end of Sinkyone Wilderness (the Lost Coast) Usal Creek enters the sea forming a beach in the otherwise steep coastal cliffs. I have fantasied about camping in this remote section of coast ever since I first heard about it more than a decade ago when I worked in Mendo and drove past the turn off twice a week. Stories of getting to Usal, staying at Usal are all over the place; exciting, lavish and harrowing. My friends Janet & Peter asked me to meet them there.Despite the forecast of rain (and lots of it) I excitedly accepted the invitation!I bravely bumped up, over and down the eroded single track road to paradise. Framed to the north by Wilderness, cradled to the east & south by Land Trust, wrapped in a magical Alder grove and shaped by the sea my story is one of intense admiration and awe. ~Long Live Usal! Thanks for an amazing adventurous outing J&P
