Camp Life – Personal Safety

The “Check-In Buddy” – Camping off the beaten path is really fun, until its not. So far my wanderings have been crisis free (knock on wood – a really BIG piece). Car trouble, a tree across a road, injury, are some of the things I think about that could trap me in the wilds. Cell coverage truly isn’t everywhere and help may take a while. I want to make sure someone comes looking for me if I don’t show up, so I arrange a “Check-In Buddy”. This is someone I can completely depend on to pay attention to my whereabouts. The right person is going to know when your due back (and scold you verbally and with mean emoji’s because you didn’t tell them you were home). I found that person. I shower her in chocolate and make her lovely meals in exchange for having my back.My Check-In Buddy and I share these fives things:1. My exact destination, what road(s) I will be taking, coming and going, AND what County it is in. (The County Sheriff will be the one to phone if need be).2. When I’m leaving and when I’m due back AND when will she hear from me again (usually the end of an outing but for longer ones we set a mid date).3. A text from me when I leave my house.4. A picture of my D.L. and my car, complete with the license plate in full view.5. A word and phrase that only we know, if used, signals I am in distress and can not talk freely (basically, get help now). What can I say..Once a Girl Scout, Always a Girl Scout – Be Prepared! (Take Care of Yourself – you got this!)
