I hope in my next lifetime I could be a Black Bear too…” I just finished the book – Shadow of the Bear: Travels in the Vanishing Wilderness – by Brian Payton. I met the Spectacled, the Sun, the True Sloth, the Asian and of course the most notorious, Polar, Brown and our very special Black Bears. What struck my heart more than anything are the cultures that live WITH, honor, and cherish these bears (although people are mauled or killed fairly regularly). One particular sentence I’ll never forget, “A bear body looks like a human being body when skinned”.
