Squirrel Pondering

This lighthearted post brightened an otherwise dreary, classically drizzly, north coast day. Click the squirrel to check it out; its sweet (and short) from the National Wildlife Federation. https://www.facebook.com/NationalWildlife/There are very few tree squirrels here in Blue Lake. I have never seen one in my backyard or neighborhood. I really missed them when I first moved here from Virginia. Virginia is full of squirrels (& trees). In fact, I spent many a hour at the Wildlife Center https://www.facebook.com/wildlifecenter rehabbing the little boogers. They can be real scary when threatened, oh so adorable in between. When I go out camping and squirrels are about I totally dig watching them. Being scolded, basically “told off”, by a tree squirrel makes me giggle, every time. Such spunk and bravado for a mammal that is fairly low on the food chain. In the Coast Range Mountains I’ve come across the most tree squirrels within the Spruce forests. Small and rusty on their bellies this is the Chickaree or Douglas Squirrel. Since one of my goals for spending time in the wilds is solace I don’t usually get too hung up on labeling; instead I like to observe & appreciate their being. But these little dynamos, who dash all over the place, (remembering Hammy from Over the Hedge??) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXr7J7Ss8lA enchanted me and we have officially met!I’ve shared company with Chickaree’s while camping in the Coast Range at Agate CG in Patrick’s Point State Park, Elk Prairie in Prairie Creek Redwoods and Jedediah Smith CG. These woods are also home to the Gray & Flying Squirrel (wouldn’t be amazing to see a flying squirrel someday). The Chipmunk and the Gray squirrel seem to like living inland, in the Klamath Mountains, a habitat with all seasons, I’ve enjoyed the company of both all over the Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forests. Thanks for geeking out about squirrels with me!I have never really thought too much about this before now (10 Nutty Facts to make you appreciate Squirrels – one of the many perks of a rainy day).

Forgot to say – Squirrel Appreciation Day is Jan. 21
