A tree fell in the woods AND…

Tales from Around the Campfire~

A tree fell in the woods AND…

I HEARD IT!

Crack,crack,CRACK, POP, pop-pop-pop thawump!

It was dusk. I was watching the last of the day fade away. The air was very still with only the slightest hint of night drawing near. I was camped in the larger end of a small subtle canyon that slowly ascended into a mixed evergreen forest. A forest altered and burned by Wildfire, recovering, returning.  Loud cracking & popping, vibrated through the canyon like thunder. The sound unmistakable, wood splintering, lots of it,  terminating in a heavy silencing thawump.

The sound energy reverberated through me and I was struck by it, by the life of this tree. The burst of energy released as it succumbed to gravity shot through me, I captured it, I wanted to run, find someone and yell, “did you hear it!”, excited and needing validation from another human ear.

It was there, it lived, it died and then it fell whether I heard it or not; but what a gift to be given, a trees last gasp! Our universal energies momentarily coalesced by sound and space. My heart opened to celebrate the life and renewal of a tree.

But I was the only human there and the tree needs no validation. It once stood, reaching, transpiring. It mingled roots and branches. It shared itself unaware and selflessly. It was a life in a forest on this planet. Now, its cells will continue to give life to others, in a whole new way.
