This is Quiet, Wild, Magical country, even Mary&Mabel say so.

I spent a few days camping and exploring in the “The Land of the Grasshopper Song” while reading this spectacular true -tale by Mary Arnold & Mabel Reed. The book is their journal account of coming to the Klamath & Salmon Rivers country to become Govt. Field Matrons in 1908. Swimming the creeks, exploring the places in the book was so entertaining! I grew to have enormous respect for these two young women. This area is rugged to travel through in 2018 its hard to even imagine 1908. I was really touched by this story, so much so I was teary eyed at the ending. My heart so full of love and admiration for these two courageous young women. The physical and culture boundaries they crossed, seemingly gracefully. The spirit and enthusiasm of adventurers they held to the end. My heart felt heavy for the Indians; the Karuk, Yurok, and Hoopa Native Americans who’s way of life had been and was being pinched out. I cried for the land, the “Up Rivers” country so battered by gold seekers and pioneers. Ansel Adams may have had his Yosemite when he said, “An Endless Prospect of Magic and Wonder”, but I’m telling you we have it right here too in “The Land of the Grasshopper Song”!
